Winter vacations in an RV can be a blast! However, there are a few things you’ll need to do beforehand to make sure your rig is prepped and ready for the trip. For tips on how to keep your RV running in even the coldest of temperatures, take a look at our helpful article below!

Fluids

Cold temperatures can often cause your RV’s various fluids to thicken or condensate, causing problems for your rig’s most sensitive system. Before you leave for your trip, we advise replacing your engine oil and double-checking your brake and transmission fluid. If you notice these fluids are low, look extremely dirty, or there are water droplets in the hoses or reservoirs, you’ll want to flush and replace them immediately. We also advise topping off your antifreeze reservoir before leaving for your trip and pouring a small amount into your gray or black water tanks to keep them from freezing.

Exterior

Keeping an RV toasty and warm isn’t always easy. There are a number of places where warm air can escape, and drafts can creep in, making it difficult to heat your rig. Before you leave for your trip we advise giving your RV’s exterior a thorough inspection, taking note of any cracks, leaks, or gaps you see. Afterward, you can grab a sealant or some weather stripping and cover these holes to help reinsulate your RV.

Tires

Colder winter temperatures have the tendency to deflate tires over time, often resulting in flats come springtime. Before you leave for your trip, be sure to check your tires’ air pressure, and top off any that are looking a bit low. While you’re down there, we also advise double-checking the tread on your tires, as worn rubber is much more likely to slip or skid out in the snow. If you suspect you might have to drive through extreme conditions, we advise grabbing a set of snow chains or replacing your current wheels with a set of snow tires.
