Learning to drive a motorhome isn’t always as easy as it looks. To help you prepare for your first trip on the open road, we’ve put together these helpful driving tips.  If you’re in need of any replacement parts or repairs before your big trip, feel free to stop by our location in Brooksville, Florida!

Stopping

One of the most difficult things about driving a motorhome is learning how to stop! Due to the large size of most motorhomes, these vehicles have a unique braking system in place that’s much stronger than the one in your car. Because of their size and weight, motorhomes also take much longer to come to a complete stop. This means that you’ll need to start braking much sooner and keep a greater distance from other cars.

Parking

Many people don’t realize how difficult it can be to learn to park a motorhome. There aren’t many spots large enough to fit a motorhome within city limits, so it can be hard to get enough practice in. If you plan on taking your motorhome on a camping trip, you’ll also need to learn to lift and stabilize your rig. Before you hit the road and get stuck in an unfortunate parking situation, we advise grabbing a few cones and practicing at home or on an empty street. If you plan to visit your local campgrounds sometime soon be sure to have a bubble level, wheel chocks, and enough jacks to safely lift your motorhome off the ground.

Practice

While there aren’t many large parking spots in the city, there should be plenty of large parking lots! Before you hit the highway, we advise driving around in your motorhome in one of these empty parking lots. This should help you learn to make the wide turns required in a motorhome, as well as practice stopping and accelerating.
