Unlike motorhomes, campers require a car or truck to help them get around. As a result, it’s important to know how to hitch and tow your model before you make plans to hit the open road. For tips on how to safely and successfully set up your camper’s hitch, be sure to read through our helpful guide below!

Preparing to Hitch

The last thing you want to do when hitching up your new camper is damage your rig or vehicle. Therefore, it’s incredibly important that you take things slowly and make sure to double-check that all your equipment is ready before you try to hitch. Before you hop into your tow vehicle, ensure that both the truck and the camper are on a flat even plane, your mount is locked into your vehicle’s receiver, and you’ve placed wheel chocks down to keep your RV in place.

Setting up the Hitch

To ensure a successful hitch, you’ll need to carefully align your vehicle and camper. To do this, we advise using a backup camera or another person to help guide you as you reverse. Once everything is aligned and your vehicle is in range, you’ll want to hop out of your car and open the coupler latch on your camper. Using a jack, switch, or crank, you’ll need to lower your camper’s receiver over the ball hitch till the latch can once again be closed. Once you’re sure everything is in its correct place, you’re welcome to lower your RV completely, lock the latch, and place down your tow chains or sway bars before hitting the open road.
